Hello June 🥶❄⛄
As the winter chill settles across South Africa, we know this season can be especially tough for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The cold may worsen symptoms like muscle stiffness, spasticity, fatigue, and even low mood or seasonal depression.
But winter doesn’t have to mean a setback. With a few mindful adjustments, you can stay comfortable, active, and emotionally well throughout the season.
🔥 1. Keep Warm (Inside & Out)
-
Dress in layers, especially thermal socks and gloves.
-
Use hot water bottles or heating pads (but with caution if you have reduced sensation).
-
Keep your living space warm and draft-free.
-
Enjoy warm, nourishing meals and drinks like herbal tea or soup.
🧘♀️ 2. Don’t Skip the Stretches
Staying still for too long can increase stiffness. Gentle daily stretches, even from a seated position, can boost circulation and ease tension.

🧡 3. Look After Your Mental Health
Winter can feel dull and isolating — especially if MS is already impacting your energy or social life. Try:
-
Keeping a routine that includes something joyful each day.
-
Joining an MSA support group (virtual or in person).
-
Reaching out to someone — even a short chat can lift your spirits.
-
Getting sunlight exposure or using a light therapy lamp if needed.
🧡 4. Remember, You’re Not Alone
MSA is here to walk this journey with you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to talk to, please reach out to your local support group or contact us directly.
Together, we can get through winter — one stretch, one warm drink, and one kind word at a time.
